Our humble kite project started as a silly thought; what if we could make a Pokemon fly? What Pokemon should it be? Eventually, we settled on driftloon , for its cute shape and easily-translatable shape as a kite. This design choice resulted in some challenges, however. Mainly, driftloon is a round pokemon, meaning that it would spin in the wind if improperly stabilized. And thus we chose to weigh the kite down with wads of crumpled paper acting as driftloon's little arms.
We were the only kite that flew on test day! We were somewhat amazed, even though we had run through the equations, double and triple checking. As an engineer, you always expect something to go wrong the first time you test a prototype. Ours held together for the day, composited of simple paper, tape, bamboo shishkebab skewers, and a copius amount of string wrapped around a no.2 pencil.
